Webhallen - Orchestra

Campaign for gaming retailer Webhallen

Background:
Could a gamer's unique skills translate into classical music? That's the question Webhallen, the Swedish gaming and tech retailer, and we set out to answer with "Webhallen Orchestra," a groundbreaking experiment. We aimed to create the world's first classical music piece designed to be performed by gamers.

Idea:
The concept was simple: we built a computer game where every action taken by each player generated a tone or sequence, building a melody in real-time.

Execution:
The culmination of this experiment was a live performance at the prestigious Oscar Theatre in Stockholm. The participating gamers formed an orchestra, guided by the composer of the piece, Max Kiusalaas.

The performance itself was a spectacle. Gamers played on a variety of platforms – PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PC, laptops, RetroFlag NESPi 4, and Nintendo Switch – all running a game built on Unreal Engine. Each platform represented a different instrument group, and every in-game action contributed a unique tone to the overall musical composition.
